Mahesh Murthy!!! The Uber Cool Venture Capitalist
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts.”
“Was there no fear of failure when you dropped out of college by your choice? Considering the fact that you did not have any professional degree then, what were your plans?” asked an engineering undergraduate. The expression his face carried was the thrill to listen straight from the horse’s mouth the legend which prevailed about this entrepreneur who had been invited to Techkriti’13- the annual SciTech fest of IIT Kanpur.
Mr. Mahesh Murthy answered this one very patiently. He replied that he did not plan anything for the long term. He just followed his urge to become an entrepreneur. As far as failures are concerned he replied that he had failed many a times and has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. After dropping out of college at an age of 17, leaving home thereafter and being a salesman for a Vacuum Cleaner Company he had his share of struggle as every entrepreneur is bound to, but defying all odds he now is a Venture Capitalist himself, funding future entrepreneurs through Seedfund. Learning from failures is the best MBA for an entrepreneur. Mahesh further proved his point by discussing the 20 mistakes of his life.
Also heading Pinstorm, a digital marketing firm, Mr. Murthy has donned many hats in his professional career ranging about 30 years like running Channel V in face of huge competition from MTV.
He told the audience mostly composed of engineering undergraduates how to have the acumen to handle money and people- the two important resources for a future entrepreneur with special emphasis on the fact that running mindlessly after money may give us materialistic success but it drains out the person emotionally.
Finally, on a concluding note, after satiating the queries of all, Mr. Murthy urged all to follow one’s dream and passion, like the work we are doing rather than killing our enthusiasm in the rat race called “competition”.
No doubt someone remarked after the session-“Wow yaar, Murthy is supercool!!”
