Not Party’s Manifesto but People’s Manifesto: Way to visible democracy
The nation seems to be in election-mode already. All media houses have begun coming up with their Opinion Poll results; actually, it started at least 6 months back, but seems to be on fire now. Whether it’s a ‘Chai’ Stall or any other hangout place or even workplace, one can see people discussing each day’s ‘breaking news’ on who said what and who did what.
What political party leaders utter in their speeches or discussion forums spell out their ideologies and perspectives on various arena. At least, that’s what we are expected to believe in. What does it all boil down to? What matters the most? Do you agree with all that they say? Do you want things as they want to be like? If yes, then you may not have understood real essence of democracy and its principles. The popular cliché defines democracy as ‘For the people, by the people and to the people’, So does our Constitution state that’ People are Sovereign’ . So why not have something of this kind which perhaps forms as the most important document for the greatest experiment of world’s largest democracy? It’s about the Manifesto.
Each political party comes up with their own ‘Manifesto’ which underlines the ‘works’ that the particular party would do if given the chance rather the chair. Do you really want those laptops, TVs, Grinders, etc. once they come to power? Or do you want jobs, better education, healthcare services and so forth? Who decides? It has to be you. So why not have your own manifesto? The People’s Manifesto. Exactly, what the manifesto should be like. These days many political parties are collecting people’s opinions and thoughts. This certainly is desirable move ahead. This should keep going and also be expanded. Like-mind people’s groups, associations and organizations must come out, brainstorm, discuss, debate, dissent and come up with what they would wish the government to serve for them. This has started off by some of the organizations, but needs to be replicated elsewhere and the idea needs to be soaked in by the masses. This on the one hand would allow people to aware themselves and those in governing chairs and on the other hand would also help them to keep themselves away from attempts by political clout to woo their voters through freebies and free play of emotions.
And of course, to make all of us realize the ‘Power of Us’ in a democracy. Its extremely important for us to understand this discretion given to us and utilize it at the right time, which is here already. List out all that you face, all that you need, all that needs to be discarded, all that needs to be reformed, form a group and let them know what actually you wish your country to have and then see if they voice you out and consider you.
